According to mythology, Mahabali visits Malayali homes on Thiruvonam to reunite with his beloved subjects, making Onam a cherished celebration of happiness, abundance, and unity.

Celebrating Onam in Traditional Style
Onam is celebrated across Kerala with a beautiful blend of tradition, colour, and togetherness. People dress in their traditional attire, adding a festive charm to the occasion. Women often wear elegant white or cream sarees adorned with golden borders, complemented by fresh white flowers in their hair. Men traditionally wear a white shirt or jubba with a golden-bordered mundu, reflecting the rich cultural heritage of Kerala.

Vallamkali, Kerala’s famous boat race, is one of the most exciting highlights of Onam. Teams row in long, traditional boats as enthusiastic crowds gather along the riverbanks to cheer them on. Known for their impressive size and synchronized rowing, these races celebrate Kerala’s strong spirit of teamwork, tradition, and community while attracting visitors from across the country.
Pookalam: A Floral Tradition of Onam
One of the most beautiful traditions of Onam is the creation of Pookalam, intricate floral designs arranged at the entrance of homes. Families create and decorate these vibrant patterns with fresh flowers, adding new layers and designs each day from Atham, the first day, through Thiruvonam, the tenth and most significant day. Pookalam competitions are also held in many communities, where creative and elaborate floral arrangements are judged and recognised.
